The girl who wanted a kitten

"Hmmm," she said. "I could... no, I won't do that." I'll ask her again and see if she says yes," she said. So she asked her mom, "May I have a kitten, please?" "No, you may not," replied her mom. "Why not?" asked Janet. "Because I don't think you're ready for pets, sweetheart," she replied.
"I have a fish!" Janet exclaimed. "But the only thing you do to take care of him is feeding him, and we do all the cleaning in the tank and putting more water in," said her mom. "And besides, taking care of a fish is not the same as taking care of a kitten. And kittens will grow up before you know it, and they will become a cat."
That night, Janet thought more about how she could persuade her mom to get her a kitten. I know! she thought. I'll ask if I can learn to take care of a cat! My friend has a cat! I could borrow him and learn to take care of a kitten.
The next day, she asked her mom if she could do that. "Okay, you can try it." So they went to her friend's house and told Janet's friend about what they wanted to do. She said that it would be okay. The kitten's name was Gerald.
Janet's friend told her what he could do and what he still needed to learn. Well... she thought. Maybe it isn't a very good idea to get a kitten. And so she told her parents that she was okay without a kitten. And that is the end of the
he story.
